THE POSITIVE PLACE. SALES MOTIVATION AND PERSONAL GROWTH

Taking responsibility

"No, I'm sorry. You'll have to deal with it. I am unable to alter time, speed up the harvest, or teleport you off this rock."

With apologies to the Star Wars universe for corrupting their dialogue, this statement shows that we need to take the responsibility for our own actions, challenges, problems, and successes.

It’s fashionable nowadays to blame someone for our troubles. We blame the government (certainly there are a lot of areas to blame there), our neighbors, the weather, the universe, God, the other drivers, the insurance companies, the food manufacturers, and so forth. We blame, blame, blame.

But sitting around blaming other people doesn’t get the job done.

When you get right down to it, there really isn’t much you can do about other people -- at least not much legally you can do -- and so you might as well take responsibility for the things you can change.

Toilet tissue run out in the bathroom? Change it. Public education going down the drain? Choose a private education. House prices sunk? Wait or take the loss. Mortgage rate too high? Refinance or stick with the current mortgage.

We’ve somehow latched onto a society where nobody in particular is responsible for anything in particular. From a society that treasured personal responsibility, volunteerism, saving, investing, and believing in the future, somehow or other, many people in our society have devolved to a point where they’re always casting themselves as a victim -- and when you get right down to it, the only thing victims wind up doing is being victimized.

Step up to the plate, choose your fight, make your stand, and take responsibility for your place in the world. Run for office -- you can’t do much worse than the jokers that we seem to have in office presently (wherever you happen to live, it seems to be the same). Do some good in life. Change, grow, learn, love, share, and be happy.
