The Value of Time

Know the true value of time; snatch, seize, and enjoy every moment of
it. No idleness; no laziness; no procrastination; never put off till
tomorrow what you can do today.
- Lord Chesterfield

Your life is ticking away.

What are you doing with it?

Are you investing your time?

Are you throwing your time away?

Are you making the most of your time?

Are you spending your time wisely?

All right – it appears I’m getting dramatic here – but I’m trying to make a point. Each of us has the same amount of time – but it always seems that some people get far more done with their time! What are their secrets?

1. They organize their day.

2. They combine jobs where possible. (They go to the store and the post office on the same trip; they take the mail to the front office when they’re on their way to a meeting; you know the drill – or perhaps you don’t.)

3. They eliminate the “time-wasting” elements from their day – or they minimize them as far as possible.

4. They make every second count.

5. They get rid of useless tasks.

6. They keep their minds focused on the task at hand.

7. They concentrate on the “high value” tasks first – and leave the tasks of lesser value to the end.

8. They take shorter lunch breaks than the rest of us.

9. They avoid useless meetings.

10. They maximize the value of meetings they get stuck in.

11. They move faster than most of us.

12. They don’t stand “around the water cooler,” aimlessly gossiping.

13. They don’t waste a lot of time composing email replies, or mindlessly surfing the Web (reading WeekdayWisdom.com is not “mindless”).

So, here’s a decision for today: start today to put at least one of these habits into your life. Pick one – it can even be the easiest one for you – and make certain you do it for a few days. Then you can work on another one – or for the best possible benefit, work on several.

Make it a game. Work to see how much you can accomplish. Work to see how many of these “lucky 13” traits you can put into your life.

This Monday Motivation is dated for Halloween. For those triskaidekaphobiacs out there, you can lop one of them off, if you’d like – but for the rest of us, let’s start working on those “lucky 13” traits – and move our lives into high gear!
