Look Ahead
I recently read part of the life history of my great-grandfather’s sister. An immigrant from Wales, at a young age she walked across the American frontier, looking for a better life in the west.
In her eighties, she ended her chronicle with the following:
“At this season of life I recall the incidents of the past for only the pleasant memories they bring. I believe the todays are just as good as the yesterdays. My heart’s best message to my sons and daughter, grandchildren and great grandchildren is: look ahead. Don’t look behind.”
And so that is our message for this week: Look ahead. Don’t look behind.
Whether your past was good or bad, the advice remains the same. You can’t drive forward by continually looking in the rear view mirror.
Concentrating on our past means we never really progress in looking toward the future.
When we concentrate on the life that was, we miss the life that is – and the one that is yet to come.
So follow her advice – occasionally recall the incidents of the past only for their pleasant memories – but live in the present, and look forward to the future. Whether your past be full of triumphs or turmoil, let it remain ancient history.
