Trust
It’s difficult to believe – but one of the things that confronts, confounds, and paralyzes most organizations is also one of the things that should be easiest to do.
Trust.
We learned how to trust others when we were children – and unfortunately, that’s the same time most of us learned that there are people who you just can’t trust.
There are always going to be those who try and cheat you, abuse you, and take you for a ride – and yet I believe most people are still trustworthy.
We might not be able to do anything about those who will cheat us blind, but we can make certain other people can trust us.
There are just a few short steps to developing trust with your coworkers, friends, and family members.
1. Don’t lie to people. If you don’t want to answer the question, divert it (“Does this dress make my butt look fat?” “You know, I really prefer the way you look in that red dress.”)
2. Treat others with respect, especially if they never get it from other people.
3. Pay your bills. Yes – I know, that doesn’t matter to your job in a corporation – but it will matter to how you see yourself. If you get in the habit of being trustworthy in financial matters, it’s easy to be trustworthy across the board.
4. Learn to trust others (but as Reagan used to say, “trust, but verify.”)
5. Ask for the trust of others.
6. Don’t do anything that would damage your reputation, no matter how much money you might make. Some things are more important than money. This is one of them.
7. If you’ve made mistakes in the past, go overboard to rectify them.
