Star Power
Today we’re going to talk about becoming a star.
Rule number one: Excel – Excel beyond your wildest fears.
Here, “fear” is the limiting word. Most of us are capable of doing great things – but because our fear stands in our way, we wind up being either “good,” “mediocre,” or “poor.”
In order to develop star quality, you’ve got to become the “best of the best.” Fortunately, you can do it – you’ve inherently got the skills – and most other people are settling for “mediocre.”
Rule number two: Persist – Persist until you succeed.
Persistence is the number one thing that separates the great from the merely good – the great persist until they succeed – the good usually give it “the old college try,” and then fizzle out. (That’s better than the others – they don’t even try.)
Rule number three: Keep growing and don’t do stupid things.
This rule comes from the “Hollywood” types. The ones that stay stars keep growing, keep trying, keep developing their craft. Others stay in one place; still others melt down and get their mug shot in the newspapers. You’ve got to keep growing, because the world changes around you – and you change as you get better. You’ve got to keep from doing something stupid because it’s the little stupid things that can easily shoot you down.
Rule number four: Refine yourself.
What does it mean to refine something? Think of oil – black, gooey crude is taken from the ground, heated up, and turned into useful petrochemicals (no I’m not advocating support of the oil industry – I’m merely using this as an example). Silver is also refined – the ore is heated and the “non-silver” stuff is taken off.
Don’t be fearful of a little bit of heat – and let the challenges you greet help refine you into a better, more polished person.
Rule number five: Promote yourself.
Look, I’m all for being humble – but nobody will ever speak for yourself as well as you can do it. Don’t get overbearing about it, but you’ve got to stick up for yourself in a workplace – few other people will even care about it.
Keep these steps up, and you’re going to develop your star power until you are a real star in your workplace or in your home.
